Trudi Canavan

bestselling author of The Black Magician Trilogy

Legends of Australian Fantasy

Last week I was very excited to receive my author copy of Legends of Australian Fantasy, an anthology of fantasy novellas. What a beautiful cover! The anthology was put together by two big names of the Australian SF scene: Jack Dann and Jonathan Strahan – both lovely people who I adore. Below the title there’s a list of contributors, but you probably can’t read it so I’ll copy it out here:

“Sean Williams, Kim Wilkins, Cecelia Dart-Thornton, Isobelle Carmody, Trudi Canavan, Garth Nix, John Birmingham, D M Cornish, Jennifer Fallon, Ian Irvine, Juliet Marillier”

It gives me a little thrill to see my name among such well known, respected local authors – most who I’ve met and many whose work I’ve read and loved. I’m itching to read their novellas.

My novella is called “The Mad Apprentice” and is the story of how black magic came to be banned by the Guild.

How do you get a hold of the anthology? It will be available in Australia in June. As for other parts of the world… I’ve been told that contracts are being negotiated. If you’re really keen to get hold of one now, you could try mail-ordering from an Australian bookshop. (Just do a search for “Australian SF bookstores”.)

  1. I have just been given the name trudi canavan to read.Any fans out there who can give me any advice on her. I am living in the u.k. thanks friends

  2. Will The Mad Apprentice be published separately so I can add it to my collection?Or is it solely available in Legends of Australian Fantasy?I would love to have it on my bookshelf alongside The Magician’s Apprentice, BMT, and The Ambassador’s Mission!!Thank you Trudi

    • I may end up publishing it separately at some point in the future, but it would be some years away I’d imagine. In the meantime, there are some brilliant writers in the anthology, many far more established and famous than me, so be assured it’s good value!

  3. Oh i really hope that this get s released over here in Ireland! You, Dart-Thornton and Nix all in one book! If it doesnt get released over here i’ll just have to bribe my sister in Sydney to post it to me!

  4. Very interesting, sadly I can’t get this book (stupid distance between England and Australia … if only distance was a matter of perspective and not really really real, he mused aloud :L).
Went into my local bookstore to find the ambassador’s mission, only to find it had sold out ‘instantaneously’ (is that how you spell it) and now I have to wait an extra ten days 🙁
Which reminds me, I need a bigger bookshelf too. Love our Books. Love Your writing style. You’ve actually inspired me to start writing. Just in case your wondering I got an A when I was writing that essay on contemporary authors critiqueing modern society, (the one where I posted that comment on the blog, before you very kindly fixed the question box).
    Thanks
    Thomas Brassington

  5. Is this book will be published also in Poland?

    • An interesting question! I hope it will be published here, in Poland, but I don’t reckon Trudi could answer that question right now.
Maybe we should ask Trudi’s publisher in Poland? Yes, we should 😛

  6. If only it was a book filled with only BMT novellas! I’d love to know more about things about the Guild pre-TMG. Anyway i must get my hands on this book as i can’t get enough of your work Trudi 😀

  7. Another Trudi Canavan story, how wonderful! I am very excited about this, having re-read Magician’s Apprentice and the Black Magician’s Trilogy in anticipation of The Ambassador’s Mission – which i loved.

However, i’m slightly saddened by living in England, and not being able to get a copy straight away!!! I think i shall be either spending lots of money on international delivery from an Australian bookseller, or sweet-talking a friend in Australia to purchase a copy for me and shipping it here! Cannot wait!

Thanks for creating such a wonderful world!

  8. Neat! Mum has been angry at me for buying and reading books while putting aside my studies. So online shopping (again) is a no. And I don’t think my local library will carry the book any time soon 🙁

    • You and me both! It’s my University finals so I’m having to put aside all non-essential reading for the moment and actually do some work, especially as the exam I did on Friday was a total catastrophe! 🙁

That said, as much as I’m an inpatient so-an-so, the shipping costs between Aussie and the UK have pushed me towards the ‘I’ll have to wait’ corner. Pity. In the meantime though, I’ll just reread Ambassador’s Mission…

      ….

After my exam of course. Just one left to go! XD *fingers crossed*

      • oh gosh everytime I start this series my mum nearly bans me from reading in general… I retaliate by bringing up how I could always turn into my brother who hasn’t touched a book in about 3 years haha!

  9. COOL!! Is this the one which has the story about Rielle? 🙂

  10. Oh, a Magician’s Guild-connected short-story!
That now makes two books I need to buy for sure on my trip to Australia: The Ambassador’s Mission and Legends of Australian Fantasy 🙂
Yay for excess luggage on the flight home!

  11. I can’t wait for this! You and Jennifer Fallon are my favourite authors, and I’m in a writing course that Kim Wilkins runs at the moment 🙂

If only it was June now!

Oh, and the interview with you has been put up on the site now 🙂 http://sentientonline.net/?p=1762
