The other parcel to arrive recently was a box of The Traitor Queens. To celebrate I’m giving away a signed copy to a randomly selected commenter who correctly answers this question:

What is the vital difference between what can be done by the wearer of a blood ring, and the creator (as in, the person whose blood was used to make it)?

Comments close in 24 hours, at 10 am tomorrow morning in Melbourne, Australia. (Though if I get a lot of comments it may take me a while to select and announce the winner.)

  1. Wow, I’m dying to read the book now :) hope the winner will have lots of fun with it…and if it’s me…well, I would probably run around like a crazy chicken and hide myself away somewhere safe and read all day long :)

so as for the answer, if I remember correctly, the main difference is that the creator is controlling the conversation, can decide when to listen in on the wearer and is not neccessarily noticed by the wearer, if he doesn’t wish to be, that is.

Hope I got that right and can’t wait to read the new book :) *ahhh, the fangirlness is starting already^^*

  2. While the maker of the ring can see everything the wearer sees, hear the wearer’s thoughts and so on, the wearer has no sense of the maker, unless the maker chooses to speak mind to mind with the wearer. Wow, that came out more complicated than it was supposed to!

  3. They can take it off and brek the conection, therfore some can be used against the maker to show them things that may hurt them. The maker can not break the connection with the blood ring.

  4. The vital difference is that the creator of a blood ring (or blood gem) can see into the mind of the wearer; see what they see, hear what they hear and experience that persons’ thoughts and emotions. However, the blood ring does not allow the wearer these same abilities in reverse.

  5. A blood ring’s creator can spy so to speak on the ring’s wearer; as in they can read their thoughts and see through their eyes. But the wearer can only do these things in return if the creator wills it.

  6. The wearer of a bloodring communicates all that he or she experiences to the creator of the bloodring when wearing the bloodring, including thoughts and feelings. An advantage is that this type of communication cannot be overheard by other magicians as thought speech can. The wearer can chose to take of the ring. The creator, I.e. the ones who’s blood is in the ring, cannot turn of the communication completely. That is quite a disadvantage if the wearer for example has run away and been eaten by wild dogs or similar which will then keep sending information to the creator of the ring while it passes through the digestive system ;)

I’ve really enjoyed reading your books, especially the Sonea series, and your website is a great inspiration. It really gets me motivated for writing :) I hope you keep writing, creating and tweeting for many years to come.

    Greetings from Denmark :)

  7. The creator of the blood gem, which is usually mounted on a ring for practical purposes, posseses the one-way ability to not only access the wearer’s external senses, but also to read their minds and mentally communicate with them. The wearer of the blood gem only has the ability to communicate mentally with the creator.

Ps. Love your books ! I’ve read all the one’s you’ve released :) You’re an amazing author and I can’t thank you enough for sharing your rich imagination with us and for not shying away from possibly controversial themes.

  8. The creator perceives anything the wearer perceives and thinks. The wearer can’t control what the creator perceives.

  9. Hi Trudi,
can’t wait to read the third book!

The difference is quite simple – hence the wearer can only communicate with the creator if the creator want’s to hear (or even feel) with the wearer. And – the wearer can’t feel or hear anything the creator don’t want to be heard.
So – such a ring something I would really like to create for you , maybe you could wear it while writing your excellent novels and share your emotions with me :-)

  10. The wearer can change, so different people can put it on for the maker to communicate to. All of their thoughts are seen by the maker, so if the maker is paying attention they can contact them securely at any time. The maker has no choice and has to see anything the wearer does, which could be rather annoying. None of their thoughts are heard though, they choose exactly what they want the wearer to hear. :) Neither has to be a magician, although they have to be made by one, but they can use the blood of another. Have a great day! :)

  11. The creator of the ring has the ability to see what the wearer sees and sense/feel what he does. But the creator is not able to stop the flood of information while the wearer is wearing the ring. The wearer can stop the connection by taking the ring off.
The creator can communicate with the wearer privately. The wearer so far doesn’t get the whole informations from the creator only the things that are meant for the person, who wears the ring, to hear.

The one whose blood is given, is always the one who will get the impressions and thoughts of the wearer, it doesn’t have to be the one who really created the ring with black magic, but the one whose blood was used will definitly get the thoughts and so on from the wearer.
Like: There was one ring created with Osen’s blood and one with Sonea’s and Osen cannot create a ring on his own, so his blood was used, so that he will get the informations and stuff.

At least I hope you could understand my attempts to explain what I mean.
    Greetings from Germany!

  12. The creator of the blood ring is able to hear, see, feel and read the thoughts of the person who is wearing the ring, whereas the person who is wearing the ring can’t do any of those things. He can only talk mind to mind with the creator when the creator chooses to.

  13. The ring allows communication across vast distances (such as say between Kyralia and Sachaka) but only the creator can see and feel the emotion even if the wearer does not wish it so. There is much risk in concocting a blood ring for if it should fall into the wrong hands the consequences could be detrimental. (As was the case during the Ichani invasion)

  14. The wearer of a blood ring can communicate with the maker of a blood ring whenever they put on the ring. However the maker can’t contact the wearer unless they are wearing the ring. The maker has no choice but to see and communicate with the wearer whenever they are wearing the ring

This is sooo awesome – ive waited so long for the end!!! Go Trudi :)

Hope you are thinking about writing more books soon – maybe a new age of five book! :)

  15. The wearer of the ring is the only one of the two who can initiate (private) mental contact with the maker by putting on the ring. When the ring is being worn, the maker can sense all of the thoughts and feelings of the wearer (but the wearer can’t sense anything other than what the maker wants to communicate to the wearer).

The maker doesn’t have a huge amount of control over how much of the wearers thoughts and feelings he/she sees – this is invasive for the wearer and distracting for the maker, and so, blood gems are only worn when the wearer and maker need to communicate.
