Making Contact in Perth

|

Next week I head west to Contact, Perth's annual convention. This time not just in the role of paticipant, audience member, panellist and author, but as the National Guest. Which means I'll be working extra hard to be entertaining, inspiring and fun.

The first event will be a talk at the City of Stirling's Osborne Library, alongside the International Guest Richard Morgan. It's at 9 Royal Street, Tuart Hill, starting at 11:30am. The flier is here.

I may also be doing some bookshop visits to sign stock before the con - I'll post details when they come in.

At the convention my schedule is:

Thursday

7:30 pm - Opening Ceremony

Friday

3:00 pm - Book Signing

7:30 pm - launch of The Priestess and the Slave

9:30 pm - Panel: Religion in fantasy

Saturday

8:00-9:00 pm - Masquerade Judging

9:30 pm - Panel: So why the hell do you want to be a writer anyway?

Sunday

12:00 pm - Guest of Honour Speech

3:00 pm - Panel: What's hot in fantasy?

4:00 pm - Book Signing

Monday

11:00 am - Panel: Sexuality in speculative fiction

12:00 pm - Panel: Writing Fantasy, Tips & Techniques

4:00 pm - Closing Ceremony

Hope to see some of you there!

Canberra Dinner

|
canberra view.jpgLast night I had a wonderful dinner at the Boathouse restaurant with booksellers, an editor and reviewer, and some of the Orbit team.

It was so much fun and the only disappointment was that the night flew by so quickly I didn't get to talk to everyone for as long as I'd like to have. Suddenly we were past the dessert and hot drinks and it was much later than I'd realised. We said our goodbyes, then I remembered I'd forgotten to take a photo. Linda rushed off and waylaid people in their cars, and we all gathered in front of the restaurant for a photo - all but Colin Steele from the Canberra Times who'd managed to slip away.

Brisbane, Here I Come!

|

I'm back from the writing retreat. We had a fabulous time and I reached the halfway point of the first draft of The Ambassador's Mission. Now I have a few frantic days to catch up and prepare for the launch of The Magician's Apprentice at the Aurealis Awards on Saturday.

It's all getting very exciting! This morning I received the first report of a 'sighting' of The Magician's Apprentice in a Melbourne bookstore. And yesterday the schedule for my Brisbane visit arrived. I'll be signing books in these shops next Tuesday (the 27th):

9am                 Angus & Robertson Morayfield

Shop 62 Morayfield Shopping Centre

Morayfield QLD 4506

10:00am          Dymocks Chermside

Shop 249 Westfield Shoppingtown

Chermside QLD 4032

11am               Mega Books

Shoppingtown Newsagency

Sandgate Road

Toombul QLD 4012

12:00pm          Riverbend Books

193 Oxford Stree

Bulimba QLD 4171

1:30pm            Dymocks Indooroopilly

Level 3, Indooroopilly Shoppingtown

318 Moggill Road

Indooroopilly QLD 4068

2:30pm            Dymocks Brisbane City

Macarthur Central

Cnr Queen & Edward Streets

Brisbane QLD 4000

So if you happen to be at one of these locations while I'm there, come up and say 'hi' and I'll sign your books personally. (Or your autograph book. Or your bus ticket. Or your arm.) Otherwise, pop into the shops when you can for a signed copy of The Magician's Apprentice. And probably as many other books of mine that I can sign in the time we've got.

Toury dates for Canberra and Sydney are now likely to occur in late February and early March. I'll post 'em when I know 'em.

Conventions in Australia

|

Every year I go to one or two science fiction conventions in Australia. What is a science fiction convention, or 'con'? Well, it can be different things for different people, so I just googled up a few descriptions and this one seems to sum them up pretty well. The cons I attend are the fan-run ones, and they tend to include literary, media, gaming and comic book 'streams' all in the one con. Several states have their own local cons, and each reflects the interests of the locals. Some, for example, have a more literary flavour, some have a lot of members into costuming.

As an author, I usually sit on a few panels, sign books, and sometimes judge a short story or art competition, or launch books. Otherwise I'm just another member of the con, watching panels, attending events and generally hanging about with friends.

The next con I'll be attending is Conflux 5, running from Friday the 3rd of October to Monday the 6th of October in Canberra. Conflux, which is held every year, tends more towards the literary side of sf than most other cons and attracts lots of local authors. Most publishing companies that have an imprint of science fiction and fantasy are based in Sydney, which is close enough to Canberra that they can easily participate.

For me and my partner it's an eight hour drive north. It's a long drive, but we always try to stay in Canberra a little longer so we can catch up with friends. And that usually means I can fit in a signing at a bookshop, too. One hasn't been arranged so far this time, but I'll be sure to post details here if it is.

I'll also post a schedule of panels and events I'll be participating in, once that information comes my way. So if you'd like to come join in the fun and catch me at one of the con events, then 'watch this space'.
