archiveMay 2006Voice of the Gods is back again!Wasn't it just sent off to the publisher a few weeks ago? I hear you ask. Yep. It was. And now it's back, having been scrutinised by an editor. I have to go through the editor's corrections and either accept or reject them, as well as read the editor queries and make any changes that result from them. I have only two weeks and two days to do it. This would normally make for a busy two weeks. Unfortunately the timing was bad. I'm going to a convention in the middle of those two weeks. I'll lose eight days to it. That leaves six days. Or eight if I work through this weekend. It's going to be a challenge. The few times I've read slush for magazines or judged short story competitions I found that the old saying is true: 90% is, ahem, 'easily cut out of the running'. It's not that 90% of the stories are truly awful (though some are!) but that they are flawed in some way. But I reckon only 70-80% of the artwork submitted for this prize was easily put aside. Cutting the rest down to a shortlist was an interesting challenge. I started to look for technical flaws. Was the composition balanced? Was the direction and temperature of light consistent? Were the proportions of figures correct (in the realist paintings, not the comic ones!)? If there is more than one figure, are they relating to each other spacially or is their pose impossible? Do they look as if they're unaware of each other's presence? And finally, was the subject really spec fic, or just a pretty picture? I've submitted my choices. I'll be interested to see which artworks end up in the show, once the other shortlist judges have made their selection and the final line up is calculated. Whatever the end result, this is going to be a very impressive exhibition, so if you're going to Conflux don't forget to check it out! Now I can also add that I'll also be signing books at Dymocks Belconnen, 6pm on Thursday 8th of June. If you're in the area, and would like books signed, come on down! Trudi Canavan posted this on 23/05/2006. permalink Website transferI've been going through the process of transferring my website to a new hoster. Due to unavoidable delays, some recent guestbook entries may not appear and my email addresses might not work for a few days. We'll try to retrieve the former, and hopefully the latter will be resolved very soon!Trudi Canavan posted this on 23/05/2006. permalink Trudi Canavan goes to Conflux 3!In a couple of weeks I'll be heading up to Canberra for a sf convention: Conflux 3: A convention of fantasic worlds There's an impressive list of guests, some virtual (check out the site to see what they mean). There will be panels and launches, a medieval feast, lots of tempting stalls selling sf-related goodies, an international art show, author readings, signings, speeches, mischief and late night drunken behavior. I can't wait! Trudi Canavan posted this on 17/05/2006. permalink Warning! As I've mentioned before, I'm going to have a newsletter feature installed so that those readers who want it can have book release announcements and coming appearances emailed to them. Unfortunately my web hoster, who has otherwise been great, has restrictions on mass emailing that prevent me doing a newsletter. I'm in the process of moving the site to another hoster. So if the site - or bits of it - disappear over the next week or so that's the reason. Don't panic! Of course, that would mean this blog and this warning will disappear too... Trudi Canavan posted this on 17/05/2006. permalink Fantasy Author Blog #1Jennifer Fallon has a spanking new website at http://www.jenniferfallon.com.au/. She has started a blog and, as I suspected, is a witty, fun and interesting blogger. Check it out. (After checking out mine, of course!)Trudi Canavan posted this on 10/05/2006. permalink A Pile of Goodies!Thankyou, Kirsty, for alerting me to the missing extract link. All fixed now! Yesterday we had lunch at my agent's house, to celebrate the signing of The Big Contract.
There's my sample copy, plus some Ashmores Strawberries and Cream, which the lovely UK publisher sent, along with a LOT of nice champagne. That book there is the German edition. I have signed several contracts for foreign language editions of the BMT, but so far only the Dutch edition has ever made an appearance. It seems like only a few month since I signed the German contract. These guys don't dilly dally! Trudi Canavan posted this on 8/05/2006. permalink What's that I hear? It's been a week for new contracts. Yesterday it was the contract for the Italian language edition and audio rights for the BMT. Now my agent has emailed to say the prequel and sequel contract has arrived. The Big One. It's very exciting! And I also heard that the abridged audio book for The Magicians' Guild has arrived at Galaxy Books, which probably means it's also available Australia-wide now. If you like to listen to books in the car or i-pod, this is for you! Trudi Canavan posted this on 6/05/2006. permalink New email addyToday I changed my fanmail email address. Why? Well, I do it every year or so when the amount of spam I get begins to annoy me. I'll put the new address on the 'email trudi' page. If anyone sent me an email using the old fanmail address this afternoon (or morning, if you're on the other side of the world!) it won't get through. Trudi Canavan posted this on 5/05/2006. permalink Done!Epilogue rewritten and spellcheck repeated. The book has been sent to the editor. Now I'll have a break from it for a few weeks, before it comes back and I'll have to spend another few weeks checking editorial corrections. But for now, I'm celebrating with chocolate muffins! Trudi Canavan posted this on 3/05/2006. permalink So close...All of my corrections have been added to Voice of the Gods except one - I now have the epilogue to rewrite. Thankfully, epilogues are short and all I really have to do here is change the point of view. There have been a few good questions in the guestbook recently (as opposed to ones already answered on the website - hint hint) but I haven't had time to answer them. Let's see... Nancy asks: Will there be a sequel to Age of the Five? I have no ideas for a sequel yet. Mind you, I was certain there wouldn't be a sequel to the BMT right up to when I was finishing rewriting the third book, at least seven years after I'd started writing the BMT. Maybe by the time I've written the BMT prequel and sequel, five or so years from now, a good AotF sequel plot will dawn on me. But I really want to write the Angel of Storms books then! Hang on... I think that question is answered on the site. Mutter mutter curse mutter. Ruth says: ...what i'd really like to know is were you always good at writing... No, I wasn't. My teachers said I had more talent than most students my age, but my writing still sucked big time. I had a lot to learn. In fact, I reckon the old saying that you don't get good at writing until you've written a million words is true. In that case, I didn't get good at it until I was over 30. Still, I had a lot of fun along the way. John Scalzi writes brilliantly about this on his blog, WHATEVER. Go have a look. It's funny in that painful-but-true kind of way: http://www.scalzi.com/whatever/004175.html#trackbacks enjoy!
